The Fairview Trust (of which Charles Louis Back is a trustee and the beneficiary) is a wine and cheese producer operating from “Fairview” farm in Suider Paarl. In sofar as wine is concerned, Charles Back has won a succession of awards particularly international and for the third successive year, claimed the highest number of medals by a South African winery at the prestigious 2003 International Wine Challenge in London. He was awarded the 2003 great Gold medal for his Spice Route Flagship Syrah 2000 wine at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelle and two Golds for Pinotage Viognier 2003 and Agostinelli-Barbera 2004 at this event in 2005. The Wine Spectator magazine awarded six of his wines 90 points and more in their April 2003 ratings. He was also nominated for wine personality of the year by the United Kingdom’s Wine International magazine to recognise “…the achievements of pivotal members of the wine world”. He was nominated as “a pioneer in the days when the South African Wine Industry favoured conservatism, Charles Back has developed new regions (Sarling) styles (Goats do Roam etc) and led the way with socially responsible winemaking”. Back is arguably South Africa’s most successful exporter and Fairview wines are the largest selling South African wines in the United States of America.
