France | Bordeaux | Teyssier/ Maltus Vineyard
Robert Parker 94; Wine Enthusiast 94; James Suckling 94; Wine Spectator 91
GRAPE VARIETIES: 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot
TASTING NOTES: This elegant and expressive wine shows perfumed Cabernet Franc flavors that come from the black fruits and concentrated tannins. It is full of ripe fruit, although the stylish nature of the wine dominates.
Jonathan Maltus is a Saint Emilion winemaker who was a key part of the ‘cult’ movement (vins de garage period) that thrived in Saint Emilion during the latter part of the 1990’s. Unlike other winemakers, Maltus applies a Burgundian vision of property in Bordeaux: Château owners in Bordeaux blend their different plots in a clever assemblage, when Maltus thinks in terms of terroirs as Burgundians do: He does not blend.
Being the owner of Château Teyssier, a grand cru in Saint-Emilion, and other garage wines; he is the first Englishman in Bordeaux to win a perfect 100 score from the influential critic Robert Parker (with Le Dome 2010). Maltus’s wines gained a reputation for being unique as for being top quality.
