Coming to Tuscany from his native Piemonte after WWII, agronomist Mario Incisa della Rocchetta had a vision for the future of this well-established wine region. Passionate by the great wines of Bordeaux, he embarked on a journey to its most magificent Chateaux and started studying their secrets. Upon his return, he founded what would revolution Italian wine: Sassicaia. The direct translation in local dialect is "Land of many stones", the perfect gravelly vineyard to plant Cabernet, overlooking the nearby Sea and crafting wines of power and finesse, with exceptional cellaring potential. The ultimate recognition of his work came in 2013, when the estate was granted his very own appellation, DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia, joining a handful of the World's most prestigious estates such as La Coulee de Serrant or Domaine de la Romanee Conti.
