In 1961, at just 21 years of age, George Fistonich leased five acres of land from his father in Mangere, Auckland and started off with just an acre of vines. From the beginning, Villa Maria was known for making bold, pioneering moves, like switching to 100% screwcap, and embedding sustainable practices in every aspect of the company- from vine to wine and beyond.
Today, Villa Maria is proud to be New Zealand's Most Awarded Winery, employing more than 250 permanent staff, growing 28 different grape varieties, and exporting wine to over 60 countries worldwide.
