When wine critic Jancis Robinson published her book "Vines, Grapes & Wines" in 1986, she could only identify 32 hectares of Viognier vineyards worldwide, mostly grown in the Rhône Valley. Since the publication of the book, much has changed. By 2016, at least 16,000 hectares of vineyards of this aromatic white grape variety had been identified worldwide, notably in Europe, the United States, and Australia.

Viognier brings about white wines with floral aromas, rich textures, and gentle freshness. The style of the wine will vary depending on the winemaker, sometimes exhibiting bright, crisp styles, and other times richer, creamier flavors.

And when it comes to Viognier wines worth trying, some standout selections include:

1. Jean Luc Colombo "la Violette" Viognier

Jean-Luc Colombo’s dream of becoming a winemaker and viticulturist came to fruition in the early 1980s with the acquisition of his first vineyard, a granite hillside planted with old Syrah vines overlooking the village of Cornas. His innovative approach was nothing short of revolutionary. And not just Syrah, Jean-Luc Colombo also brings a variety of fascinating hues to the Viognier grape. His "la Violette" Viognier wine is one of his masterpieces.

Brilliant, light straw color. On the nose, a wild flower bouquet, possessing delicate aromatics of peaches, dried fruit and white flowers. An elegant, dry wine with rich flavors of acacia flowers, yellow peaches and exotic fruits.

2. Pierre-Jean Villa Primavera

Pierre Jean Villa is a French winemaker who has worked in both Burgundy and the Rhône Valley. He is the founder and owner of Domaine Pierre-Jean Villa, a wine estate that produces natural wines from organic and biodynamic grapes in several appellations, such as Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, and Crozes-Hermitage.

With 100% Viognier, Pierre-Jean Villa Primavera is not just a wine but an artistic masterpiece crafted by the talented hands of Pierre-Jean Villa. This wine exudes wonderful aromas, with delicate floral notes evoking a refreshing, gentle sensation reminiscent of spring.

3. Guigal, Condrieu

The Guigal Estate was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in Ampuis, a small ancient village and cradle of the Côte-Rôtie appellation. The history of the Guigal family reflects the glory of the wines of the Côte-Rôtie. The wine family played a pioneering role in improving Côte-Rôtie's international reputation. Their single vineyard wines: La Mouline, La Landonne and La Turque (sometimes referred to collectively as "La La's") is renowned internationally.

If you're seeking a more affordable wine to enjoy the excellent winemaking techniques of this estate, then Guigal, Condrieu is a perfect choice. It's a Viognier wine with an irresistible, seductive flavor profile. Brilliant clear golden yellow. Intensely flowery (violets), and fruity (apricot, peaches and citrus) aromas. Fresh and round. Rich, unctuous and full bodied.
